Society for Promotion of Science & Technology in India (SPSTI), which was set up as a registered society in the year 2009. Its focus is on the popularization of science and technology amongst masses, especially youth. The Society has ninety-four members most of them being scientists,
administrators, and academicians of repute. The Society has undertaken several multi-dimensional initiatives. One of the standing activities of the Society since the year 2011 has been to hold Summer Schools in Science and Mathematics for selected students of Classes IX to XII at various
places in the schools of Haryana, Punjab and Himachal Pradesh.
The duration of each school is 28 days and is attended by more than 200 students per location. Usually, students in rural areas and small towns are preferred. The main emphasis is on improving their concepts in science and mathematics and to cover difficult parts of the syllabi.
For teaching physics, mathematics, biology, chemistry and managing the schools, the Society hires students of all India institutions and reputed universities/colleges such as IITs, IISERs, Delhi University, Central Universities, Panjab University, NITs, Delhi Technical University, NSIT, and Punjab Engineering College.
Last year, fifteen summer schools were held, for which eighty-one students of the above-mentioned institutes were recruited. They had successfully managed the summer schools and all their academic activities. The feedback was extremely positive and encouraging. While the participants benefited substantially, the mentors too learned a lot and could appreciate the ground realities of our country and deprived sections of the society. In a way, it was their direct contribution to nation-building. Fifty-five summer schools had been organized so far.
We propose to engage in ninety motivated UG and PG students as mentors/ interns. Each mentor shall be given an honorarium of Rs. 11,000 and actual to and fro travel by train (sleeper), by the shortest route or bus fare. Arrangements for boarding and lodging of the mentors shall be made by and paid by us. Interns would not be required to make any payment in this respect. We try to make arrangements in the hostels of government institutions/reputed colleges located at the places where summer camps are held. The mentors shall also be given a certificate at the end. I shall be grateful if you could give a wide circulation to this letter amongst your students.
